Biggest Rivalry in college baseball

This weekend Clemson and Carolina will meet in a home and home baseball series that could lay the ground work for breaking the tie in sporting events for the year, with Carolina taking Football and Clemson taking Basketball. Granted both Cu and USC basketball programs don’t have much to brag about, except for maybe Tre Kelly deserving Player of the Year in the SEC. I think Carolina has a great chance of taking both games this weekend, with Harris Honeycutt and Mike Cisco on the mound for the cocks.
A little did you know for this weekend as well?

The Carolina pitching staff has been tremendous in the first nine games with a team ERA of 2.41 in 82 innings pitched. The squad has 88 strikeouts to just 20 walks allowed and 65 hits yielded. 13 different pitchers have seen action this season already.

Any thoughts about the game, predictions?

I told you so

Since relatively early in the basketball season I told anyone who would listen that Clemson is not any good. Since I was speaking to mostly South Carolina fans I did not receive much opposition. Having grown up in Greenville, I have seen the pattern emerge every year the exact same way. Clemson plays a terrible OOC and starts off 10-0 or 11-2 or something like that. The Greenville News then writes an article about how they should be ranked, and they aren't getting respect, and they are a legitimate Sweet Sixteen team, etc, ad nauseum. The Clemson fans (who must be the most ignorant basketball fans in the ACC based on when the home crowd boos) begin talking about Final Fours and ACC Championships and Dental Hygiene and all other manner of things with which they are not the least bit familiar. And each year, just as I have had about enough ACC conference play shows up and reminds everyone just how bad Clemson is.

This year was no different. The hysteria of starting 17-0 had only been previously matched in Tigertown by the unmitigated braggadoccio of fans following the football team's beating Georgia Tech. Then, what happened? Nothing. Clemson didn't suddenly play worse. They started playing real opponents. In short order they were exposed. Now with a win at mighty Miami in overtime no less, Clemson looks poised to lock in a NIT bid.

I thought I was one of the few to recognize this phenomenon early in the season until I came across this:

"Rob Daniels, an enterprising reporter at the News & Record of Greensboro, N.C., dug a little deeper this week. He found that the Tigers will secure yet another dubious dishonor if they continue their free fall from 17-0 and fail to make the NCAA Tournament. According to Daniels' research, 30 ACC teams have started the season with a 10-0 start or better since 1979-80, when the NCAA lifted its limit on bids awarded to each conference. Of those 30 teams, just three failed to advance to the NCAAs.Take a wild guess which teams were responsible for those flameouts. Clemson (10-0 in 1994-95), Clemson (11-0 in 1985-86) and Clemson (11-0 last season)."

And you will be able to continue to add to this list for years to come because Clemson will continue to play a joke of an out of conference schedule.

USC and the NIT???

Unless USC wins the SEC tournament to earn the league’s automatic NCAA tournament bid, the Gamecocks are headed to the NIT, right?

Not so fast.

At 14-14 (and 4-11 in the SEC), USC isn’t guaranteed anything just yet, even if the Gamecocks are the two-time defending NIT champions.

First, USC isn’t going anywhere if it doesn’t finish with a winning record. The Gamecocks close out the regular season on the road against LSU.

Then comes the SEC tournament, where USC likely will take on the No. 3 seed out of the weak Western Division. Win that and the Gamecocks could face the second seed out of the East - likely Vanderbilt.

So where does that leave USC?

Coach Dave Odom says the Gamecocks likely need to win at least two more games as possibly as many as four to feel comfortable about their NIT chances. What, you might ask, has the college basketball world come to when a team with a winning record from a so-called power conference that has a winning isn’t assured of a trip to the NIT?

With the NCAA buying the NIT, the rules have changed. Last year the NIT began guaranteeing a spot to any regular-season conference champion that wasn’t selected to the NCAA tournament.

Seven teams, including Georgia Southern, fit that criteria a year ago, when the NIT field was 40 teams.

Now it’s 32. You do the math.

With the SEC getting four to six teams in the NCAA tournament, the remaining eight to six teams certainly won’t all be bound for the NIT.

In the past, Odom said he’d bet 80 to 85 percent of the teams from power conferences with winning records made the NIT field. Clearly that won’t be the case this year.

Blowing smoke...

Tobacco foes in South Carolina are pushing a proposal that would raise the state's lowest-in-the-nation cigarette tax (7 cents a pack) almost to the national average of $1 per pack. (The national average now is $1.01).The 93-cent per pack raise by Rep. Seth Whipper, D-Charleston, is similar to a proposal made last year. The proposal would hike the tax three times more than a proposal floated by GOP Gov. Mark Sanford.

Advocates say the tax would raise $223 million in South Carolina. They say the money could be used for a variety of purposes, including research, smoking cessation plans, and programs for kids to improve health, nutrition and literacy.

House leaders, however, say the proposal hasn't got much of a chance this year. More: The State, Greenville News.

Any thoughts on the issue?

Rishi a 'baby daddy'...

not really but we thought we would throw it out there since many men are lining up to claim to be the "proud papa" of Anna Nicole Smith's child. Also the drama has cooled down a little since the wacko judge last week but I am sure there is more to come. And we thought we would throw this "rumor" out there since no one knows what Rishi is up to in southern cali. The baby is set to inherit over 400 million dollars....

Is all of this drama for the love of the child or the love of money?

It is offical the South Carolina Football Team unveiled its new jerseys this past Friday, and they are actually 'koool' looking. They are made by Under Armour as LOHD reported a while back, can you hear the "Click Clack" already?

Thoughts?

At the NFL Combine...

USC, Clemson and the state of SC is well represented.

In addition to Newton and Rice, defensive back Fred Bennett also has been invited to the combine from USC. Clemson has seven invitees: defensive end Gaines Adams, offensive linemen Dustin Fry and Nathan Bennett, receiver Chansi Stuckey, linebacker Anthony Waters and defensive backs C.J. Gaddis and Duane Coleman.

No other state schools will be represented, though there were four other players with South Carolina ties on the invite list. Linebackers Justin Durant (Hampton) and Lawrence Timmons (Florida State) were teammates at Wilson. Virginia Tech offensive lineman Brandon Frye played at Myrtle Beach and North Carolina running back Ronnie McGill was a standout at Clover.

Will Sidney be a First Round pick? Will Newton play WR?

Report: Family ties Sharpton to Thurmond

As reported today:

Geneaologists have found that civil rights activist the Rev. Al Sharpton is a descendent of a slave owned by relatives of the late Sen. Strom Thurmond, a newspaper reported Sunday.

The Daily News said professional genealogists, working at the newspaper's behest, recently uncovered the ancestral ties between one of the nation's best known black leaders and a man who was once a prominent defender of segregation.

"I have always wondered what was the background of my family," the newspaper quoted Sharpton as saying. "But nothing — nothing — could prepare me for this."
"It's chilling. It's amazing."

Sharpton's office said Sunday morning that he would not comment until a news conference planned for later in the day.

Some of Thurmond's relatives said the connection also came as a surprise to them. A niece, Ellen Senter, said she would speak with Sharpton if he were interested.

"I doubt you can find many native South Carolinians today whose family, if you traced them back far enough, didn't own slaves," said Senter, 61, of Columbia, S.C. She added: "And it is wonderful that (Sharpton) was able to become what he is in spite of what his forefather was."
One of the late senator's sons, Paul Thurmond, and a nephew, Barry Bishop, declined comment, the Daily News said.

According to the newspaper, the genealogists found documents establishing that Sharpton's great-grandfather, Coleman Sharpton, was a slave owned by Julia Thurmond, whose grandfather was Strom Thurmond's great-great-grandfather. Coleman Sharpton was later freed.

The newspaper said the lead researcher was Megan Smolenyak, the chief family historian for Ancestry.com and an author of several published books on genealogy. Another researcher on the project was Tony Burroughs, who teaches genealogy at Chicago State University.
Strom Thurmond, of South Carolina, was once considered a symbol of segregation. During his 1948 bid for president, he promised to preserve racial segregation. In 1957, he filibustered for more than 24 hours against a civil rights bill.

But Thurmond was seen as softening his stance later in his long life. He died in 2003, at 100. The longest-serving senator in history, he was originally a Democrat but became a Republican in 1964.

His children have acknowledged that Thurmond fathered a biracial daughter. Essie Mae Washington-Williams' mother was a housekeeper in the home of Thurmond's parents.
